Interview with Dave Myers, Environmental IT Specialist at The Dow Chemical Company

[EarthSoft] What drove you to implement a centralized environmental data management system (EDMS)? What was the situational analysis or problems you were trying to solve?

[Dave Myers, Dow Chemical] Dow chose to implement centralized data solution due to a highly variable data management workflow between sites. Data management varied from site specific spreadsheets to local databases. The Remediation Technology team wanted to have centralized data access for analytics. Centralized data management also allowed us to standardize data loading formats and automate the data delivery process. We also have been able to implement automated reporting solutions that decreased reporting cycle time by over 50%!

[EarthSoft] How did you choose the solution? Was it functional requirements, market research, reference from others? Can you describe the process?

[Dow] We evaluated 3 software options and chose EarthSoft EQuIS due to:

  1. EarthSoft’s duration as market leader
  2. EarthSoft’s training and support
  3. Local and Cloud-based hosting options
  4. Ability of third party tools to interact with the database

[EarthSoft] Describe your environmental data management program(s), such as the number of environmental programs, geographical coverage, number of users, number of sites, other.

[Dow] Dow has 138 active facilities in US, Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, China, and Japan.

We have > 300 active users worldwide from ~ 10 different companies including Dow and our consultant partners

[EarthSoft] Can you provide either quantitative or qualitative improvements in your environmental data management processes post implementation? Gains in quality, efficiency, process, other?

[Dow] We leveraged EQuIS data to negotiate a reduction in Trip Blank collection frequency for multiple Dow programs resulting in an estimated 250,000 USD savings and growing.

[EarthSoft] Any lessons learned that you want to share?

[Dow] Think governance from the start to make data consistent and usable. Consider multiple methods for visualizing and reporting data that fit user’s needs and technical acumen.
