EarthSoft Interview with Integral
Client: Integral Consulting, Inc.
Interviewee: Brooke Arena, Data Solution Architect
[EarthSoft] What drove you to implement a centralized environmental data management system? What was the situational analysis or problems you were trying to solve?
[Integral] Integral Consulting recognized the need for a scalable data management platform to support increasing data volumes and the evolving needs of investigation and remediation projects. While our previous custom database system was strong for analytics, we wanted a solution that could support the full lifecycle of environmental data management.
Implementing EQuIS allows us to standardize data management while also improving accessibility. Project teams and clients can quickly access data through dashboards and reports, enabling near real-time visibility into project results and conditions.
Additionally, because EQuIS is widely used across the consulting and regulatory community, it supports more consistent data structures and makes collaboration and data transfer between organizations much smoother.
[EarthSoft] How did you choose the solution? Was it functional requirements, market research, reference from others? Can you describe the process?
[Integral] Our evaluation process considered both functional requirements and broader industry alignment. We wanted a system that could support the full lifecycle of environmental data management—from data ingestion and validation to analysis, reporting, and visualization—while also being scalable and improving data accessibility for project teams and clients. We also looked closely at solutions widely used across the environmental consulting and regulatory community. EQuIS stood out because it is a well-established platform with strong capabilities for managing environmental data, built-in reporting tools, and the flexibility to integrate with analytics, GIS, and visualization platforms. Ultimately, the decision was driven by a combination of functional fit, industry adoption, and the ability to build a sustainable data management foundation to support our teams and clients over the long term
[EarthSoft] Why did you ultimately select EQuIS?
[Integral] We ultimately selected EQuIS because it provides a strong, scalable foundation for managing environmental data while aligning well with industry standards. Its flexibility also allows it to integrate into our broader workflows through APIs, Standard Outputs, and configurable templates, allowing us to enhance and build upon the platform as part of our overall data ecosystem.
[EarthSoft] Describe your environmental data management program(s), such as the number of environmental programs, geographical coverage, number of users, number of sites, other
[Integral] Our environmental data management program supports a wide range of project types, including litigation support, environmental investigation and remediation, long-term monitoring, and data analysis projects. Our work spans sites across the United States, covering diverse regulatory programs and environmental media.
Currently, more than 50 internal project team members leverage our EQuIS Enterprise system to manage and access project data. In approximately a year and a half since implementation, we have established 17 active EQuIS projects, with an additional 15 projects currently in active migration or planning phases as we continue expanding adoption across our portfolio.
The platform supports centralized data storage, standardized data processing, and accessible reporting, allowing project teams to efficiently manage environmental data and quickly share results with stakeholders through reports and dashboards.
[EarthSoft] Can you provide either quantitative or qualitative improvements in your environmental data management workflows post implementation? Gains in quality, efficiency, process, other?
[Integral] Since implementing EQuIS, we’ve seen significant improvements in efficiency and accessibility across our environmental data management workflows. Data ingestion, validation, and project setup processes have been streamlined, reducing overall processing time by approximately 60% compared to our previous system.
Project teams now have much faster access to their data through centralized reporting and dashboards, allowing them to review results and begin analysis almost immediately after data is loaded. We have also seen faster onboarding of new users, as the standardized structure and tools within EQuIS allow team members to quickly learn and participate in established data management workflows.
Overall, the system has improved the speed, consistency, and usability of environmental data across our projects
[EarthSoft] Any lessons learned that you want to share?
[Integral] One key lesson learned has been the importance of early and consistent communication with project teams to understand their goals and how they intend to use their data. Different projects have different needs, whether that’s standard reporting, regulatory screening, data visualization, or developing custom applications through tools like the REST API. By understanding those objectives up front, we can design data workflows and structures that better support the project from the start rather than retrofitting solutions later.
Another important lesson has been the value of careful planning when migrating projects from legacy systems into EQuIS. Migration provides an opportunity to review historical data, ensure it is clean and maintains integrity, and address any issues prior to loading. EQuIS’s built-in data checks are effective at identifying potential data issues, which must be documented and resolved as part of the migration process.
