EarthSoft Interview with Terracon
Interview contributors: Terracon’s Alexa Teipel, Corporate Data Manager/EQuIS Administrator and Kelsey Tobin, Data Management/Governance Technical Lead. Alexa and Kelsey began working together in 2019 at Terracon and both have a background in Geology, Environmental Site Investigation and Remediation. Alexa and Kelsey work together to create data collection and delivery solutions accessible to all using EQuIS.
[EarthSoft] What was the situational analysis or problems your solution solves?
[Terracon] Terracon has a large volume of small environmental projects that require management in an efficient and standard way across the company. We wanted to create and implement tools that were accessible to project staff who are not data professionals.
[EarthSoft] What are the key parts to the solution and how does EQuIS help?
[Terracon] Terracon designed a self-service workflow in EQuIS Enterprise to allow project staff to load data and export report ready deliverables for any site using a standard EQuIS Enterprise web dashboard. This workflow provides data entry for location information, sample information, fluid gauging, groundwater stabilization parameters, well construction, and laboratory analytical.
[EarthSoft] What are the benefits for all the stakeholders?
[Terracon] Our EQuIS workflow enforces the Terracon data standard, improves efficiency and data accuracy, enables report consistency, provides centralized data storage and provides a system of record. The workflow positions Terracon to manage a higher volume of projects with complex data needs.
[EarthSoft] What does the workflow look like, how many people, organizations and sites are involved?
[Terracon] Project staff can load field and laboratory data using webforms on the Terracon EQuIS Enterprise dashboard. They can view and analyze project data directly from the dashboard, export report ready tables and export project data into consumable formats for visualization. We are piloting this workflow in ten Terracon offices across the country with anticipated growth nationwide.
[EarthSoft] Can you provide either quantitative or qualitative improvements in your environmental data management processes? Gains in quality, efficiency, process, other?
[Terracon] Use of EQuIS has directly impacted project efficiency. Terracon has over 100 diverse offices across the country, standardizing workflow and deliverables allow us to produce more consistent reporting products across offices. Project staff have reported time savings and data quality improvements on projects of all sizes using the Terracon EQuIS workflow.
[EarthSoft] Any lessons learned that you want to share?
[Terracon] Standardizing project workflows allows for EQuIS to be deployed and scaled across a wide range of sites and users with minimal overhead setup for each project.
Building a Terracon data management team with practical project experience has allowed us to anticipate needs and design tools that integrate into existing workflows with minimal disruption.
